She attributed this largely to a disproportionate influx of elderly moving into the county.
According to figures presented by Aging Together, in 2006,22 percent of county residents were 60 years or older. By 2030, that number will likely rise to 38 percent.
Lillian Aylor, a life-long resident of Rappahannock, spoke about the demographic shift that she had witnessed in her time in the county.
“The younger generation, there’s no work for them in Rappahannock,” she said. “Everyone has to move out of the county to get a job. and leave the elders alone.”
Aylor said that the exodus of young people from the county can leave the elderly without caretakers.
Michael Soule addressed the problems he has encountered providing meals and other assistance to seniors in Rappahannock.
