At 2 p.m., the house was still smoldering. A large plume of smoke could be seen from well over a mile away. A steady wind stoked the coals, and portions of the house occasionally burst into flames, bringing nearby firefighters running with hoses.
Two fire trucks and about half a dozen firefighters from the Washington fire squad watched over the smoking ruins. The other companies had left in the morning after putting down the fire.
Spieker said a crew stayed at the site until about 9 Friday evening.
"The worst thing we could have is it could spill off into the woods,” she said.
Joseph Homing, who owned the house with his wife Lynne, was at his Washington, DC., residence at the time of the fire. He said that a neighbor in Rappahannock called him a little before 6 Friday morning and told him that his home was on fire. When the Homing’s arrived about two hours later, they found their vacation house burned down, he said.
“It’s just a total loss,” he said m a phone interview last Tuesday night. “Theres nothing salvageable.”
