Early in the fourth quarter the Lady Panthers figured out the key to cracking Wakefield’s swarming defense -get the ball to Kim Hutcheson.
But by then, it was simply too late.
Hutcheson scored 12 of her team-high 17 points in the final six minutes, as the Lady Panthers attempted to erase a 17-point fourth quarter deficit.
In the end though, they simply ran out of time as the Lady Owls held on for 40-31 win.
“We did the same thing Saturday night,” said RCHS coach Scott Wilde, referring to last weekend’s Rockwood Tipoff Tournament in which the Panthers rallied from 17-5 halftime deficit to defeat Bishop Walsh (Md.) 38-33. “We were out-hustled and didn’t run our offense for the first three quarters, then we settled down and got into a flow. We were able to pull out the win against Bishop Walsh, but we weren’t that lucky tonight.”
The Lady Panthers trailed 34-17 with six minutes remaining, before Hutcheson got into rhythm. Hutcheson willed the Panthers to within seven at 36-29, but down the stretch turnovers simply haunted the ladies of Rappahannock County. They committed 17 of their 29
