An early morning fire leveled a house outside the Town of Washington last Friday, bringing out five of the comity's six fire departments to battle the blaze.
No one was home when the fire began and the cause is still unknown. The house, located at 200 Poplar Ridge Lane, belonged to Joseph and Lynne Homing, of Washington, D.C.
Washington Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Stephanie Lewis said she received a call around 5:45 a.m. Friday from a man who had noticed smoke while hunting near the house. She dispatched the Washington, Flint Hill and Sperryville fire departments, which arrived at the scene around 6:15, she said. Lewis said that the Amissville and Castleton fire departments reported soon after.
Washington Fire Chief Ann Spieker said that the roof had mostly collapsed by the time the departments arrived. Firefighters drew water from a nearby pond and brought the 60-foot-tall
