The Panthers offense was anemic as they hosted Wakefield of the Plains in their home opener on Tuesday night.
After a weekend in which they posted 55 points in a three-point loss to Black Lick Valley (Pa.), and then manhandled Meyers Dale (Pa.) 5829 at the season-opening Rockwood Tip-off Tournament, Rappahannock County’s offense struggled to get into a rhythm in their home opener.
The Fighting Owls limited the Panthers to 10 first half points as they held on for a 4332 victory.
“In the first half we couldn’t have put the ball in the ocean if we were standing on the beach,” RCHS Coach Bob Czekaj said. “We settled down and started shooting a little better in the second, half, but we still didn’t shoot the ball very well. It happens every year. We come out and stink' it up in the first home game. I don’t know if it’s nerves or what, but we’re always too tight the first one.”
Despite their poor start, the Panthers climbed back into the contest midway through the fourth quarter.
After trailing 31-18 after three quarters, thp. Panthers went on a 13-4 ruif ’to start the fourth quarter and edt the deficit tb four. Chase Tupper started* the Panthers rally with a pair of three-pointers. Add in a layup by freshman Connor Settle and the Panthers trailed 3(1-26 with 5:05 left. After a jmhper by the Fighting Owls’ Eric Wilson stretched the lead back to nine points, the Panthers trimmed the lead even further with a pair of free throws by Dean Hogan and another free throw by Brook Stokes. Stokes helped cut the lead to four points with 3:58 to play on a rebound and put-back of a missed Hogan free throw.
