The foundation recently was awarded a $200,000 grant, which brings the group within $100,000 of its $450,000 target. Lander emphasized the need to finish the job and reach that goal.
“The foundation has been toiling in the trenches for some time and we have brought in the funds to make this project real,” he said. “But we really need help to close that gap of $100,000. We are asking for the county to realize the need for our seniors and help by contributing the remaining funds.”

Landfill closure
The Department of Environmental Quality stopped by the Amissville Landfill on Nov. 27 for a surprise inspection and the landfill “passed with flying colors,” County Administrator John McCarthy said.
The landfill is scheduled to close to commercial haulers in the next couple weeks, he said. County residents who bring their household trash, recyclables and small amounts of home-improvement materials to the site may continue doing so.
