First on the regulation race card is a $25,000 Sport of Kings maiden hurdle. Designed with a tempting purse to attract the sport’s most talented young ‘chasers, the 2 Vi-mile event drew a field of 12 set to start.
The second race is the popular Steeplethon, a three-mile ‘chase over some of the sport’s most varied fences. Heading the field is last year's winner Scuba Steve. (See related article, this section.)

Bubble Economy, winner of both the Virginia and International Gold Cups last year, is trained by Cup specialist Jack Fisher — partner of six-time winner Saluter, a horse that literally owned the marathon race in the mid'90s.
But 2007 Virginia Gold Cup winner Salmo prepped with a spin on the turf at Fairfax two weeks ago, and the locally-bred gelding clearly loves the distance.
