All steeplechasing is about racing over fences, but some tests ask more than others.
1 lurdle racing is almost pure speed. A jump in a hurdle race is little more than an elevated stride, as swift hurdlers lift for the brush-topped, fourfoot simulated hedges meant to be jumped on the gallop.
l imber racing, on the other hand, demands more of a horse — longer races (three to four miles, to the average hurdle's two miles) call for stamina, and solid jumps require scope and balance.
A division that has taken root in American 'chasing merges both.
