The real crowd pleaser comes near the end. With a half-mile to run, the field dashes through shallow Swan lake in the Great Meadow infield, causing a motorboat-style wake and scattering the living swans from their quiet repose.
The creators of the Steeplethon wanted to make a true jumping test for steeplechasers, taking the sport back to its roots in the foxhunting field where horses and riders traversed the countryside and jumped whatever obstacles blocked the path.
