came home after that first year and told my mom and dad I didn’t think I was going back. Now Dad did everything he could for us but he still had my two sisters in school so he told my Atom if I wasn't going back to school, she needed to find me a job. He wasn’t going to have me just hanging around the house doing nothing. Jobs were not too plentiful around here then so Atom put me to work helping her clean houses for people. We went somewhere just about every day, cleaning homes for the rich people there in Grundy.”
The family continued attending horse shows too. Her dad’s leatherwork was in demand and besides, the family loved horses and enjoyed the shows. They noticed there was a particular style dress coat thaf the folks showing horses preferred to wear when riding in the ring. It was a bit of luck for them that a store in Bluefield which carried this style coat went out of business.
"We took $50 and bought all the coats they had remaining. I can’t even remember the name of the place now but we made them an offer for all the coats left. WO took them to the horse show and sold them all. WO did pretty good on them,” Betty said. “I looked inside of the coats ■ • . ■ i
