Another is the 50th District in Hampton where Democrats Richard M. Bagley and John D. Gray are said to be under serious attack by Republicans Charles Q. Buckwalter and C. E. (Ed) Knight, III.
The GOP, of course, hopes to hang on to the 46th District seat in Accomack and Northampton Counties being vacated by Republican State Chairman George McMath. Republican Robert S. Bloxom and Independent Paul B. Merritt are locked in a tight race in that district. While technically running as an Independent, Merritt says he is a Democrat and will join the House Democratic Caucus if he is elected. The Republican leaders, however, will settle for relatively modest gains in die House. McMath says he would be happy if the GOP picked up eight seats, a goal which most observers would consider highly optimistic. Former State party chairman Richard Obenshain says he would settle for three seats, bringing the GOP delegation to 20.
