Subfreezing temperatures about mid-April brought severe damage to a well advanced fruit bloom for both peaches and apples. Moisture shortage also overshadowed potential fruit production but output is expected to be about 40 per cent below normal. . The moisture shortage that developed in mid-July grew into a severe drought through August and into early September for a large portion of the state.
Areas hardest hit were in the southern, central, and upper valley sections of the state. Corn was caught at a critical point in development. Livestock producers had to feed green chopped corn to offset the poor condition of grasslands. Soybeans were also reduced sharply. Some threat to tobacco yields was indicated but the crop turned out better than expected due to the offsetting effect of irrigation, scattered showers and better weights out of a dry season. Quality was lowered.
