The ERA

To the editor:

Following are questions and answers about the often misunderstood Equal Rights Amendment.

Q. Will the ERA deprive women of alimony and child support?

A. No. In Virginia, both parents are already responsible for support of their children within their means. With the ERA these alimony and support payments will be based on individual circumstances, already the practice in most states.

Q. Will the ERA force women to take a paying job and to provide half of the family income?

A. There is no law in the United States nor in any state that forces anyone to work.

Q. With the ERA, couldn’t women use their maiden names, and wouldn’t this “foul up” the deeds and records?

A. Virginia has no statute
