Rappahannock voters will go to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new General Assembly Delegate from the 25th Legislative District for the first time in 20 years. Democrat John J. “Butch” Davies and Republican George Beard are fighting for French Slaughter’s old seat. Both are good men. Either one would ably represent us.
They have conducted an exemplary campaign, appearing jointly on several occasions to address substantive issues rather than just shaking hands and kissing babies. Their opinions and stands are not widely divergent. Both appear to be middle-of-the-road-butleaning-towards-the-conservative-side
candidates. The differences lie primarily in background and style.
Davies is a young Culpeper lawyer. We’ve heard criticism directed against his candidacy because of his profession. We agree that government from the federal level on down is dangerously top heavy with lawyers. However, legislation is still written in “legaleses”, that almost foreign language only attorneys understand.
