John Capelle asked Rogers for a forecast on the Planning District’s growth over the next 20 years.
She responded that she didn’t have the data necessary to make such a forecast but predicted that growth in the Rappahannock-Rapidan District would be influenced to a large extent by the success of Fairfax County in attracting new industry. If the job market there expands, it’s only a short commute to the Rappahannock-Rapitian District, she noted.
“Bedroom development is expensive because you get the school kids and not the tax base,” interjected Fauquier representative Richard McNear. “I have a suggestion for a law change,” he added. “Live in the county where you work. That will solve all our problems.”

The Virginia Business Report, a publication of the School of Business Administration of the College of William and Mary, says that September was the best business month in the state since March. Construction, electricity usage, new car registration and non-agricultural employment all “showed healthy increases when compared to Sept. 1976,” the report says. The state’s unemployment remained at 5.1 per cent, the same as a year ago, but still a full two points lower than the national rate of 7.1 per cent, the report says. Inflation in the state increased at a yearly rate of 6.5 per cent.
