If turkeys are tense this time of year, their breeders are probably even more nervous as payoff day comes for their delicate crop.
Turkeys are four times more susceptible to colds than people are. Cholera, blue comb, and other fatal fowl diseases also can flash through a flock in a few hours.
Next to predators such as foxes and owls, turkeys are their own worst enemies. Spats often break out at the feed trough, and when other turkeys rush in a noisy riot can ensue.
If, in the contest, one turkey comes out with a bloody spot, the others will peck at it, eventually pecking the bird to death.
The stupidity of a turkey, combined with curiosity rivaling a cat’s, can be fatal.
