Understandably, Republican spokesmen deny that they are “targeting” any districts for special campaign effort, but it is clear they believe their chances are best in those districts in which no incumbent is running.
High on the Republican want list of what they consider propbable wins is the 25th District seat which covers Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock Counties. The seat is being vacated by Slaughter, and is being hotly contested by Democrat John J. (Butch) Davies III and Republican George P. Beard Jr., both of Culpeper. Local observers give Beard the edge.
Another hard-fought contest is underway in the 24th District for the seat to be relinquished by Gwathmey. In this two-member district, incumbent Democrat Lewis P. Fickett, Jr. of Fredericksburg and Democratic nominee D. Wayne O’Bryan of Glen Allen are being strongly challenged by Republicans F. C. (Duke) Zeller, Jr. of Fredericksburg and J. N. (Jim) Burkitt of Ashland. A fifth man in the race is Independent Robert H. Coats of Mechanicsville.
