Mayes, ruled that Virginia’s state constitution “is no broader than the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the U.Si” The 14th. Amendment accords only a limited degree of equal protection to women, not full equality—far less than the equal protection it accords minorities. Q. Will the ERA deprive states of their sovereign right to make laws? A. No. The ERA respects a state’s rights and encourages states to conform their laws to the principle of equality.
