On grounds of proven integrity, moral character and leadership, I would vote today for Mills Godwin, John Dalton, Harry Byrd Jr. or most of our senior conservative legislative leaders for any office in this state now—EXCEPT Governor.
We are faced with an informal arrangement among nominal Democrats, Republicans and independents who hold every top office in the state—Governor, Lieutenant Governor, both our U. S. Senators and half our U. S. Congressmen. Separately, they are individuals of the highest character. Together they now possess a dangerous amont of authority and power. As philosophical brothers they have, and I think it is fair to say unintentionally, resisted change to a point at which the Commonwealth is creaking.
