The Rappahannock Supervisors decided at last Thursday’s Board meeting to relieve only part of the Welfare Department’s financial problems.
Public Assistance Director Elizabeth Buntin asked the Supervisors for S3,400 to cover shortages in local money for both mandatory and optional programs. The Supervisors appropriated enough for one mandatory category—purchased services—and left another mandatory category with its deficit intact while denying funds for the operation of the county Welfare Department’s only optional program.
Before Mrs. Buntin began her explanation of how the shortages occurred, Supervisor Chairman E. P. Luke asked her “to go back to budget time” when Mrs. Buntin first brought her requests for the current year before the Board. Mrs. Buntin responded that all budget matters pertaining to her department were “decided before 1 got up here. I had no input.”
