The steeplechasing season ends in Virginia Saturday with the Montpelier Hunt Races at Mrs. Marian duPont Scott’s beautiful estate near Orange. Post time for the first of five races is 1:30.
The classic Noel Laing handicap, third on the card, is usually one of the best races of the year, drawing the finest ’chasers in the nation, who use it as a prep for the $100,000 International Colonial Cup run at Camden, S. C. two weeks later.
Running over Montpelier’s brush course of live privet hedges (the only such fences in this country) in the $5,000 added Noel Laing will be last year’s winner of this race, Fire Control. The gray Woodcrest Stables’ color bearer was later a close second in the Colonial Cup, Beverly Steinman’s Frenchbred Bel Iman, leading money winner this year, trained by Paul Fout and ridden by his son Doug, should give him plenty of competition.
Among other leading contenders are two of Mrs. Miles Valentine’s homebreds, Deux Coup and Down First, recent winners at Belmont and Rolling Rock respec^
