As forewarning, Luke said “this building is going to have to have another exit from the second floor or stand the possibility of being condemned.” The only exits from the upstairs courtroom now lies over an old furnace, Luke continued, and is therefore particularly susceptible to dangers of fire.
Sheriff William Buntin appeared before the Board to inform the Supervisors of the latest developments with his department’s liability insurance problems. Costs of liability insurance have jumped, said Buntin, and the increase has caught the Compensation Board unaware.
The Sheriff said that last year, the Compensation Board paid two-thirds of insurance costs with the amount running $75 per sheriff department employee throughout the state. This year, said Buntin, two-thirds of the costs for the same coverage will be $188 per person. The Compensation Board does not have the money—a half million dollars or more—to cover the difference, according to Buntin.
