Republican John N. Dalton, 46, of Radford won the Virginia governor’s race Tuesday over Democrat Henry N. Howell, 57, of Norfolk.
It was a proud victory for Lieutenant Governor Dalton who had the support of Republican Governor Mills E. Godwin whom he will succeed. Dalton is the adopted son of Ted Dalton who twice ran unsuccessfully for governor.
Howell, populist scourge of “the Big Boys” including the state’s major utilities, lost despite the active support of President Jimmy Carter and other national Democratic leaders.
With 76 per cent of the state’s precincts reporting the vote was Dalton 539,617 or 56.4 per cent to Howell’s 409,173. It was Howell’s third try for the governor’s office and third loss.
