Therefore, if a man with a family to support and a single woman apply for the same job—all other qualifications being equal—the employer may place himself in danger of litigation by judging in favor of the man on the ground of his greater need.
In the state of Washington, the ERA has caused problems by removing the protective labor legislation from women that had formerly guaranteed them coffee breaks, lunch breaks, the right to ienye company property at lunchtime, and safeguards against heavy lifting.
