But Democrat Charles S. Robb, 38, of Fairfax County won easily over his Republican opponent, state senator A. Joseph Canada Jr., 39, of Virginia Beach. It was Robb’s first bid for elective office, and incomplete returns showed him ahead 433,233 or 54 per cent to Canada’s 369,494.
Republican J. Marshall Coleman, 34, of Staunton won an upset over longtime Democratic delegate, Edward E. Lane, 53, of Richmond. Coleman forged ahead with 421,924 votes to Lane’s 373,973.
The five general obligation bond questions apparently were headed to passage throughout the state on the basis of early counts Tuesday night.
