“What is Companion Services?” asked Dike. '
Mrs. Buntin replied that the name was a misnomer since a lot more than companionship was provided through the program. She explained that the “companion” does light housekeeping and runs errands for the poor who have no one who can help them in their homes, free. The purpose of the program, she said, is to keep recipients in their own homes and save nursing home costs. She added that her department currently handled five Companion Services cases.
Supervisor Wood again interjected that he didn’t understand the Welfare Department problems. “We’ve been accused of voting our own minds,” he said. *‘I don’t know who’s we’d vote if we didn’t vote our own.” Wood then moved that the Supervisors appropriate no additional funds for Welfare operations. His motion was immediately seconded by Supervisor Clarence Baldwin.
