regulation was effective October 21. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce Pesticide section certifies individuals to use restricted pesticides. Safety training for farmers and commercial applicators is provided by the Virginia Tech Extension Division.
Norman Lau, Extension coordinator of the chemicals, drugs, and pesticides unit at Virginia Tech, explained the training program he helped develop. It includes training manuals, slides, movies, and practice tests, The training manuals may be studied at home, or reviewed in one-day sessions provided by Extension personnel.
To date, 14,5% private and 3,860 commercial certifications have been issued. This represents roughly 60 per cent of the desired total.
Lau felt that the overall training effort has made participants realize just how dangerous pesticide misuse can be for themselves, their loved ones, and the environment.
The training program will continue. Individuals who have not been certified to use restricted pesticides, should contact their local Extension agent for details.
