The Virginia Employment Commission reports that latest figures show an overall employment upturn. In fact, the June figures reflect somewhat of a record. It’s the first time in 31 years that unemployment across the state has decreased in June. That’s the time of the year when the workforce is ‘ traditionally enlarged by students seeking summer jobs.
“It seems to me they’re being absorbed somewhere somehow,” says Culpeper VEC spokesman Jackie Cooke. Cooke added that in Culpeper the “bottom line (number in the work force) is expanding while the rate goes down” which leads her to believe that the rates are expected to be good for a while.
However, Cooke cautioned that the rates don’t show the fiill job picture. It doesn’t reflect those who are “under-employed” in a job far below their abilities. Nor does it show those who continue to check the jobs listing at the VEC while they
