The State Police investigated six of the crime index offenses and cleared 60 percent of those. Of the 61 offenses handled by the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department, only 16.39 percent were cleared.
No Excuses
“I’m not making excuses. I know we don’t have a very good rate for crimes solved but we solve every one we can!” said Sheriff W. A. Buntin. He explained that an offense is classified as cleared once charges are placed against the alleged perpetrator. “Percentage wise, we have a good rate on convictions of those who are charged even though many of the cases are plea bargained with reduced charges,” Buntin added.
