Another one of Harrison’s favorite furniture reclamation projects is touchup work. “There’s an art to getting a cigarette bum or a nick out of a table top, matching the wood with a lacquer stick, using a bumin knife to make the edges meet. Then you rub it down with felt, go over the spot with stain and finally pencil in the grain with an artist’s brush.”
It’s painstaking, delicate work but that appears to be Bill’s forte, judging from the projects he has going as a sideline to refinishing and restoration. In fact, the sidelines are more in line with the image evoked by his business name, WoodThoughts.
He fashions wooden candle sticks that can grace a table or hang as sconces from a wall. He carves riders on horseback, sailing over fences or pausing before a gallop, to perch as weather vanes on a rooftop.
