Cen-Tel complicated matters on Friday. At their July meeting, members of the HZ A denied a special use and variance requested by Centel Telephone Company for equipment already installed in Flint Hill on Route 729 near 522. The connections were enclosed in two cabinets measuring seven feet high and two feet wide. They were attached to a concrete pad on a right-of-way across the Robert Metcalfe property.
“MayIk* I jumped the gun,” CenTel’s contractor John Itrown said at the time, “But is this considered a building?”
Apparently, the answer then was “yes.”
Hut in that earlier case, concrete was poured on the premises over a gravel bed and the earth was excavated. The new C&I* facility considered Friday was described by BZA chairman Lee Bird as "erected not constructed.” It is set down, not dug in he said, and easily removed in one piece with a forklift. And so it does not appear to be a “building."
“We seem to be scattered like a covy of quails on this issue,” Bird continued. “We must consider what we did last time. We were presented all the same arguments last time and it would be inconsistent for us to make a different finding this time.”
