“This is the first time I’ve been rained out all season,” Tim McCarthy said as he sat in his trailer watching the rain run down the windows.
McCarthy came from Westerville, Ohio, to help the Amissville Ruritan Club hold its inaugural donkey ball game Thursday. “You need the rain, but I feel sorry for the Ruritan club.”
Outside the donkeys were feeling sorry for themselves. When they saw McCarthy, they began to bray, carry on, and compete for his attention. He explained that they were all “psyched up” for the game, disappointed that they didn’t get to play in Rappahannock.
“They’re highly trained professional athletes,” he said. According to his literature, more than a million spectators enjoyed a Buckeye Donkey Ball show last season.
