It’s been quite a month for the Schoppets. Nancy’s old friend from California came to spend a week. Jane Lowenberg used to work with Nancy in Hawaii; now she owns an avocado ranch near Los Angeles. Anyway, Nancy says they hadn’t seen each other in about five years. A week really wasn’t long enough to catch up so Jane invited the Schoppets to the avocado ranch.
Instead they went to the Bahamas for a week! There were ten taking the tropical excursion: Richard and Nancy and their four children, as well as Nancy’s mother, brother and inlaws. They had only been back for half an hour when our correspondent called Sunday evening, but were they fiill of enthusiasm for the cruise—and grateful for the cool that had descended over Castleton during their absence.
Melzie Woodward says it seemed like Thanksgiving or Christmas Sunday. She wasn’t talking about the weather, though. She was talking about the family gathered together at the dinner table. John Henry and Peg, Tabbatha, Jeffrey and John, Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. Randy Sheads and their three—Dorenda, Wallie and Sherrie; and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Grimsley and their boy Andy were all there. And Melzie says even washing the dishes was fun ’cause the daughters pitched in and they all had a good talk.
Gene and Donna Fisher, Wayne and Lewis spent the weekend in their trailer at the campground outside of Fredericksburg. On Sunday Mitch and Judy Hitt and Kerrie visited them (Kerrie, the star of the high diving board) and there followed a sporting event of note. You may recall the championship horseshoe pitching tournament of the 4th of July during which Mitch Hitt and Kenny Settle became local super-stars—practically asked to endorse Wheaties and all that! Well, half of the team went down to defeat last weekend. Playing with Lewis, Mitch was defeated by Gene Fisher and Judy. To hear Judy tell it, the agony of his defeat was compounded by the fact that her team had come from behind. In the third match, the two teams were tied one and one. The score stayed at 171 for the longest time, Lewis and Mitch ahead. Then suddenly, Gene and Judy had tolled up 17 to their 19. Judy’s final ringer did it. Final score 19-22. And the new champions Gene Fisher and Judy Hitt!
Of course we’d still like to see Gene Fisher take on Kenny Settle.
By the way, Tracy wasn’t a spectator at this sporting event. She was weekending with the Murphys in Culpeper. Her former babysitters took their houseguest to the cinema on Saturday and to the Charlottesville shopping malls on Sunday. She stayed from Friday through Monday.
We missed the 25-hour visit to Castleton of a guest from Florida during the last week of July. Dave Konick’s father, Abner Konick, of Palm Beach was here. He attended the Lions Club pic
