When the Iranians took over the American Embassy in Iran, it was apple pie for the t.v. news critics. Every hour on the hour, for one year all I heard was tie a yellow ribbon around a tree, and why isn't Carter doing something! Well, he was and did do something. He sent out a secret mission to rescue the 52 hostages, much to the consternation of the U.S. Congress since their fragile egos were tramatized for not being told of every detail of the mission. More bad luck for the President. Unfortunately, eight brave American men gave up their lives. At least Carter was honest and man enough to accept full responsibility for the mission’s failure. The hostages are all back home now, thanks to the patience and perserverance of Jimmy Carter.
Come on news reporters, let’s give the man credit where credit is due. If some of you news-casters were worth your salt, the American public would be hearing more from the 52 hostages. We certainly were bombarded every hour on the hour from all you Carter critics when they were in Iran.
Another disappointing development occurred when Carter wras running for reelection. Some of his own party members turned against him, such as Ted Kennedy and Jane byrne of Chicago — obviously to split the democratic vote. To my delight, we don’t hear anymore about Kennedy entering the presidential race and Byrne was not re-elected mayor of Chicago.
