around the shoreline when Lelia Lucas motored out to the pond in her electric golf cart for the first plunge of the year. Swimming in Rappahannock on March 14 isn’t something most people find even tolerable, much less enjoyable. Mrs. Lucas is no exception. “I don’t know why I do it any more. I guess because swimming from March until November is the only thing left that I can brag on!” she admitted, chuckling.
She won’t tell about more than her membership in Huntly’s one-woman polar bear club unless pushed— and pushed hard. Not that the swimming isn’t noteworthy, particularly when the swimmer is 84 years old. It’s just that she has done and still does so much else—and does it all well.
