first few days of the strike, CenTel customers trying to direct dial long distance ran up against “all circuits are busy” recordings. “People who would normally dial ‘zero’ for an operator (to put through a long distance call) were dialing “one” and it overloaded our trunk lines,” Flippo explained.
“We’ve really done pretty good, looking at all the conditions, but we don’t know how long the strike will last. They haven’t been out for very long,” he added.
The drought that has wrecked havoc with farm fields, pastures, gardens and water supplies has been a blessing for the phone companies, according to the CenTel manager. “If we have storms and rain, it could cause some problems,” he noted.
