She read extensively on the subject of agriculture, hired a farm management consultant to teach her the rest and Wakefield Manor was on its way to becoming a model farming operation. In 1974, Mrs. Lucas’ son, Col. Robert Dickey, retired from the Marine Corps and joined her in Rappahannock to take over the day-to-day management of crops and cattle. Last fall, the mother-son team was honored as the county’s soil conservationists of the year for 1982.
