Then An Artist
She took up painting only after her sight deteriorated too far to continue the needlepoint masterpieces that consistently won “best in show” at the prestigious Woodlawn competition. Mrs. Lucas has a rare eye condition that has been treated over the years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She has endured five operations. Her vision comes and goes now and when she can see, she paints.
She’s modest. Three years ago, friends took paintings they’d received as Christmas presents to the little art gallery housed in a Flint Hill com crib. Impressed, proprietor Mary Schumaker set up a show of Mrs. Lucas’ work.
This time, a friend brought Dan Lewis and Sarah Shorter to the cottage at Wakefield Manor to see the paintings that hang there and to meet Mrs. Lucas. Impressed, they arranged the exhibit that will open this
