Even at the regional level, which here includes gymnasts from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, competition is so intense that coaches sometimes hold their students back by having them not attempt compulsory exercises of which they are technically capable. In this manner, they continue to compete with athletes having less developed skills.
