To the editor:
Just because Jimmy Carter was not elected for a second term, does not make he, nor his presidency, a failure.
Perhaps the failure lies with the American people who failed to see thuoftgk the biased reporting of'the news media.
Ever since the “Georgia Boy” and his administration hit the “Big House” in Washington, they were chewed up and spat out by the judicial reporting of the t.v. networks. They were belittled and badgered by pettiness, and the American people were brain-washed (if you will) by prolonged incompetent reporting.
First of all. Carter was criticized for permitting his brother, Billy, to expose his good-natured humor by making pubic appearances on talk shows. Any president who would allow such straight-forwardness by a member of his own famioy would be the first in line to support a true democracy. In the words of Harry Truman, “When even one American who has done nothing wrong is forced by fear to shut his mind and close his mouth then all Americans are in peril.”
President Carter was then plagued by the investigation of his budget director, Bert Lance, whom I might add was acquitted on nine counts of supposed bank fraud. Due to all the bad publicity and being a long-time friend of Carter, Lance thought it best to resign. *■
Carter then underwent an investigation of his peanut warehouse, which proved to be a needless waste of time and taxpayers money. The investigation proved no wTong-doing (much to the dismay of the news media).
When President Carter wanted to appoint the first federal black judge in the state of Virginia, Harry Byrd Jr. was incensed over the nomination. Byrd, a Virginia Independent, fought Carter for years to stop Shiffields confirmation.
