among 144 secondary schools honored at White House ceremonies last fall following an extensive search for excellence by the “Nation at Risk” commission. The building houses grades 6-12, but the middle school and high school have their separate year books, separate school paper and clubs, separate principals.

Grades 6-8 are a sort of hinterland somewhere between elementary and secondary in most schools. George Mason has its own middle school course of study. It is published in detail to show students and parents precisely what will be expected.

The advanced middle school student who meets established entrance requirements may take algebra, Latin, French or Spanish for high school credit. Computer literacy is available in 7th grade. Superior readers may enroll in the Junior Great Books Program in the 7th grade and a special creative writing program in the 8th grade. Sex education and drug and alcohol education start in the 6th grade.
