Proud Of IB
Thoms is also proud of the school’s membership in the International Baccalaureate program. The I.B. started in 1958 in Geneva, Switzerland, after an international group of educators decided to create a universally recognized program of study for high school students that would take account of various college entrance requirements in different countries.
George Mason joined the I.B. program in 1981 and Thoms says school officials are “committed to it,” especially as a way to motivate gifted students.
The I.B. stressed language and math and is especially designed for students during their last two years of high school. Courses are grouped in six subject areas with a specific syllabus and examination for each: math, social studies, experimental science, foreign language, English and an elective such as computer science, music, art, a classical language or a. second foreign language.
Special syllabuses are available in drama, environmental studies, marine science, political theory, peace studies, nutritional science, natural science and computer programming.
Students who want to receive an I.B. diploma must take all six basic courses and pass the exams. In addition they must write an essay, complete a “Theory of Knowledge” course and perform community service work.
