There is a pleasant atmosphere at George Mason because there is almost no vandalism, very few dropouts, no violence and a sense of family, according to Sprague. The school has the second lowest drop-out rate in the state and one of the lowest student/teach ratios—ten students for every one instructor. The small classes allow the teachers to get to know the children in their classes.
Special Advisor System
A special teacher advisor system allows each staff member to take special care of a dozen, who meet for about ten minutes every' morning of theiir, school career at George Mason during what would be normally called home room. The small group becomes close friends, almost family, during their time together with each group, “thinking they’re the best,” Dr. Thoms points out.
The teacher/advisor gives each kid a “kick in the pants” or consolation as the case may need, he says. The teacher/advisor also keeps in close contact with the parents of his charges.
