A student unwilling or unable to fulfill the requirements of the diploma can receive a certificate for each I.B. course and examination taken. These may be used at selected universities for individual course credit or advanced placement.
In Virginia I.B. is recognized at Averett College, Hollins College, Lynchburg College, Mary Washington, Old Dominion, University of Richmond, Virginia Intermont College, Virginia Military Institute and William... and Mary.
Fairfax High School and George Mason are the only high schools in the state offering I.B. classes.
Thoms says approximately 60 students are signed up for I.B. It takes about 10 teachers to administer it. But I.B. isn’t cheap, he says. Examinations cost $125-300 per subject and each enrolling school must pay an annual fee to belong to the I.B. program. This ranges from $3,000-$10,000. “But if you’re serious about raising the standards of excellence in your schools, this program seems worth the price,” wrote Thoms in a magazine article on the subject.

Excellence means providing the right equipment, too.
