Also considered a plus on the aide’s side is the experience gained by his wife, Linda, in managing Robinson’s 1982 campaign in which the incumbent coasted to an easy victory by some 30,000 votes.
No Millionaire
Hobgood estimated that a campaign for the seventh district seat would cost between $150,000 and $200,000 as a conservative guess. “No, I’m certainly not a millionaire,” he said, laughing in response to a question on his financial resources. “But if I didn’t think that the money could be raised, I wouldn’t be exploring the situation. Mr. Robinson never spent a dime of his own money on his political campaigns,” believing instead that a viable candidate should and could attract the necessary financial support, Hobgood said, adding that he shares the same opinion.
