(Continued from Page 1) Falls Church originally seceded from Fairfax County with the avowed purpose of starting their own school. The Thackreys remember participating in the petition drive ui the late ’40s to establish the city of Falls Church. At the board of supervisors meetings the people were met with the standard answer that everybody wants better education, but no one wants to pay for it, Franklin Thackrey recalls. Yet the citizens' group distinguished itself as a rar- | ity. They specified that they wanted to pay more taxes for better schools.
There grew up the two square mile area around George Mason Jr./Sr. High School which is the city of Falls Church Says Mrs. Thackrey, “It sort of becomes like one of your own children. We feel we have achieved many of the things we wanted in the ’50s.”
