regulations, nor did they observe management techniques so vital to the survival of the modem deer. The white man also leveled the forests for his timber and cleared the land for farming. This land-use trend continued for generations, and together with unregulated hunting it drove the animals to near extinction.
Modem game management, begun in Virginia in 1916 with the formation of the Game Department, has gradually brought the deer back. Restoration of the deer herds was the prime reason for forming the Game Department, and it began its work by importing deer from Alabama, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin to supplement the meager native stock.
The comeback was slow. In 1928 the statewide harvest was only 687 animals, less than half the bag of Fauquier County alone in 1982, and just a fraction of the statewide harvest of 88,641 that season.
Even as late as 1947 Virginia deer hunters took only 4,020 animals, and that season no deer were killed in Fauquier, Loudoun, Rappahannock, Clarke or Fairfax counties. Frederick County did give up 93 deer that year, Page 14 and Warren 12. A decade later, however, all of the Northern Piedmont counties were producing modest harvests and they have grown steadily since.
