Thoms thinks how it has again become fashionable for students to take make-up tests in the halls. In the late ’60s, he remembers, it was thought wonderful to have the halls full of kids. They were learning creativity and independence; they were “doing their own thing.” Today, the way to be is locked up in rooms spending time on task, he says. Styles will probably change again.
Excellence means being good enough to know you need to keep growing and changing. That’s his philosophy. His main interest these days is the “science” of learning. The next improvement in teaching techniques will be based on research into reinforcement, brain development and time on task theories.
