From the start, Ann Oliver was the star ball carrier for RCHS. First to the buzzer, she interrupted questions again and again, each time with the right answer: Hr Watson, the friend of Sherlock Holmes who moderated Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery tales; Beowolf, the oldest English epic poem; the scientific definition of catalyst. Her responses gave the rest of the RCHS veterans of last year’s Pop Quiz Competition — Cheryl Atchison, Will Oliver and Jonathan Watson — a chance to take the hand-off and chalk up additional bonus points.
At the end of the first half, Rappahannock’s squad held a comfortable 105 to 50 lead.
In the second half, Cheryl Achison took control, grabbing the toss-ups for more drives at bonus points. She knew the world’s tallest waterfalls (Angel Falls), and the master of terror (Edgar Allen Poe). In the ensuing conferences before the bonus answers, Jonathan and Will sped through computations faster than a running back can complete a pass pattern to come up with figures on cosigns, tangents and the value of “x” and “y”.
The second half ended with a bigger lead, 215 to 80, for Rappahannock.
In the final “overtime” period of nothing but tossups, Jonathan hit the buzzer with a vengance, practially shouting out that Dataware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
