Abundant deer populations also create highway risks. In any given year 2,000 to 3,000 deer are involved in accidents with automobiles, and even a dozen or so with trains. Some of the traffic accidents result in human iryury and substantial property damage.
Deer may also wander onto airports where they are a hazard to air traffic.
And then there is crop damage. When deer become a threat to crops, wardens are authorized to issue permits to reduce their numbers. Usually 500 to 1,000 deer are lost annually in this manner.
